Mercedes-Benz CLS by Carlsson


German tuner Carlsson has introduced its own edition of the Mercedes-Benz CLS ahead of its Geneva debut tomorrow.

Carlsson's chief designer Rolf Schlepp has created a new aerodynamic kit that accentuates the CLS's coupe styling. That includes a front spoiler, an RS front spoiler lip (also available in carbon), stainless-steel grille inserts, rear spoiler and a rear apron with integrated diffuser.

For the performance tuning, Carlsson offers power boosting kits for several CLS engine variants, including a boost on the twin-turbo V8 of the CLS 63 AMG that dials output from the series' 557 PS ( 410 kW / 550 bhp) up to 600 PS (441 kW / 592 bhp).

On the diesel-powered CLS 350 CDI, the Carlsson C-Tronic control unit boosts the power rating by 20 percent to a total of 320 PS (235 kW / 316 bhp) and 780 Nm of torque (575 lb-ft) from the series' 265 PS (195 kW / 261 bhp) 650 Nm (479 lb-ft). The 0 to 100 km/h sprint time is improved by 0.3 seconds over the standard 350 CDI to 5.9 seconds.

For the exhaust, there's a stainless steel rear silencer and double-oval tailpipes, with Carlsson offering stainless-steel tailpipes as an extra option.

Alloy wheels in 1/10 design (five simple and five double spokes) can be had in sizes up to 20 inches.

The C-Tronic SUSPENSION kit is adaptable to the AIRMATIC suspension from Mercedes and can lower the car 30 mm.

Things remain as elaborate, and then some, on the inside. Carlsson uses top-notch materials for the cabin finish in leather and Alcantara with carbon and wood trims (wood inlays with a piano black varnish). The seats and door panels are upholstered in Carlsson Nappa leather with contrasting stitching. There's also an Alcantara sports steering wheel, brushed aluminum pedals and foot rests, and floor and boot mats with the Carlsson logo. Carlsson even informs us that drinking-quality water is used in the tanning of the leather. That's how refined this tuning package is.

Mansory Cormeum

German tuner Mansory has comprehensively reworked the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. The result is the Cormeum, named after an opera aria.





Changes to the bodywork go well beyond just sticking a body kit on. The front end, which has been totally redesigned to reduce lift, now sports aggressive air intakes and new headlights. Lighter roof and door panels are fitted, while replacement wings widen the car by 66 mm at the front and 84 mm at the rear. Around the back, a race-spec diffuser is there purely for more down force, as is the boot lid spoiler.



Combined with the forged alloy wheels - 20” diameter at the front and 21” for the rears - the alterations knock 90 kg off the weight of the donor SLS AMG.



To go with the reduced bulk is more power. The V8 engine in the Cormeum boasts 650 bhp (485 kW / 660 PS), compared to the standard car’s 563 bhp (420 kW / 571 PS). However, if that’s still not enough, Mansory is saying that outputs of up to 790 bhp (588 kW / 800 PS) are in development.



Any carbon fibre enthusiasts thinking of buying a Mansory Cormeum had better be quick, as production will be limited to just fifteen examples.

Arguably, the last thing that the Ferrari 599 GTO needs is more power.



That hasn’t stopped tuner Novitec Rosso though, which has lifted the GTO’s outputs from 660 bhp (493 kW / 670 PS) and 620 Nm (457 lb/ft) of torque to 875 bhp (653 kW / 888 PS) and 862 Nm (635 lb/ft).





Those are enormous increases, achieved by reworking the twin superchargers, fitting high-flow air filters and fuel injectors, replacing the exhaust system and fiddling with the engine’s ECU.



The end result is, well, rather underwhelming. Whereas the standard GTO will accelerate from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.35 seconds and to 124 mph (200 km/h) in 9.8 seconds, the Novitec version does each sprint in 3.2 and 9.1 seconds respectively. Improvements that hardly embarrass the stock car, then.



Top speed also gets a similarly slight increase, rising from ‘over’ 208 mph (335 km/h) to ‘more than’ 211 mph (340 km/h).





Completing the conversion are lower sports springs, a front axle lift function to help negotiate speed humps, lightweight five-spoke alloys and wider Pirelli PZero tyres.



Perhaps the nicest thing about the Novitec Rosso 599 GTO is the colour scheme. Inspired by the Écurie Nationale Belge 250 GTO that won the 1964 Tour de France in the hands of Lucien Bianchi and Georges Berger, it features silver paintwork with a distinctive Belgian racing yellow stripe across the bonnet.

HAMANN HAWK based on Mercedes SLS AMG

Based on the Mercedes SLS AMG the Hamann Hawk will be making its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

The bird of prey with its open wing doors has an Everose Gold exterior finish and features a wind tunnel tested body kit. Starting at the front there is a new front bumper fascia with LED lights and enlarged air inlets. Carbon fiber hood allows hot air to escape while the fender flairs provide an extra 60mm on each front side and 70mm on each rear side. Side skirts, rear bumper fascia with diffuser and carbon fiber wing round out the body kit.

Performance of the already potent 6.2-liter V8 engine is enhanced with high-performance titanium exhaust manifolds and sports catalysts while a sports air filter is used on the intake side. In concert with a remapped engine control unit, power output is raised to 636 PS (628 bhp / 468 kW) from the standard 571 PS (420 kW / 563 hp) for a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h (199 mph).

The coilover kit with four height-adjustable dampers and four progressively wound springs lower the center of gravity by up to 30 millimeters. Wheels are Hamann's own lightweight forged wheels in 9Jx21 with tires measuring 245/30 ZR 21 at the front and 12.5Jx21 with tires measuring 345/25 ZR 21 at the rear.

HPE700 Camaro Convertible by Hennessey


Hennessey Performance has unveiled the first details about the 2011 HPE700 Camaro Convertible.

Like the previous HPE700 coupe, the convertible features a 'CarbonAero' body kit (which includes a front splitter, a rear diffuser and revised side skirts), a painted hockey stick side strip, and 20-inch alloy wheels with Pirelli P-Zero tires.

Power comes from a Corvette ZR1-sourced LS9 engine which has been outfitted with cold air induction system, upgraded pulleys, and high-flow fuel injectors. Thanks to these modifications, the 6.2-liter V8 produces 755 hp (563 kW / 765 PS) and 763 lb-ft (1,033 Nm) of torque - an increase of 117 hp (87 kW / 119 PS) and 159 lb-ft (215 Nm). This enables the coupe (convertible figures are still pending) to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and run the quarter mile in 10.9 seconds at 130 mph.

To ensure the chassis can handle the added power, engineers installed an adjustable coil-over suspension, upgraded sway bars and a Brembo braking system with 15-inch rotors.

Available as a coupe or convertible, HPE700 production will be limited to 24 units.

Volkswagen Lifts the Top off New Golf Cabriolet Mk6

The 2011 Geneva Motor Show will mark the return of the Cabriolet nameplate to the Golf range after an almost decade-long hiatus. Based on the underpinnings of the latest generation Golf hatchback, the two-door four-seater features a soft top with an electro-hydraulic drive that can be raised or lowered in only 9.5 seconds. The process can also be performed during driving at speeds of up to 30 km/h (19 mph).  

The exterior styling is similar to the three-door Golf Mk6, with the Cabriolet featuring a unique rear section, lower profile roof line and more swept-back angle of its front windscreen frame.
Whereas previous Golf Cabriolets featured a fixed central rollbar, VW's newcomer gets a pop-up rollover protection system similar to the one found on its sister Audi model, the A3 Convertible. Minus the four-seat layout, the Cabriolet's interior is identical to that of the hatchback.
The Golf Cabriolet measures 4,215 mm in length, 1,424 mm in height and 1,779 mm in width, meaning its 208mm shorter than the Eos hardtop convertible. However, the two models share a 2,578 mm wheelbase, resulting in the same interior space for all four passengers. According to Volkswagen, with the roof down, the Cabriolet offers 250 litres of boot space.
In Europe, the convertible version of the Golf will be available with a choice of six turbocharged direct-injection engines whose power outputs range from 105HP to 210HP. These include four petrols (1.2-litre TSI 105HP, 1.4-litre TSI 122HP, 1.4-liter TSI 160HP and 2.0-liter TSI 210HP), and two diesels (1.6-liter TDI 105HP and 2.0-liter TDI 140HP).
The most fuel efficient version is the 1.6 TDI with 105 PS and BlueMotion Technology, which consumes 4.4 lt/100 km (53.5 mpg US) and emits 117 g/km of CO2.
In Germany, advance orders begin tomorrow with prices starting at €23.625.. Volkswagen did not say if or when the new Golf Cabriolet will be offered in North America.

It was not long after the beginning of the C300 Chrysler HEMI ® power in 1955 that became known as "banker's hot rod." For 2006 Chrysler 300C SRT8 is available in new color silver steel exterior. Also new for 2006 is a system for monitoring tire pressure standard, an available Kicker ® high performance audio system and video system available rear seat.

Powertrain

The Chrysler 300C SRT8 425 horsepower (317 kW), normally aspirated 6.1-liter HEMI has the highest output for its size of any naturally aspirated V-8 engine ever offered by the Chrysler Group. Its nominal 69.8 per liter exceeds even that of legendary 1966 "Street HEMI." Torque is rated 420 lb-ft (569 N • m).

Although the Chrysler HEMI was born in 1950 and entered into legend in the 1960s and 70s, the current version took much of his inspiration from the original, particularly the namesake hemispherical combustion chamber, which provides power and effectiveness.

When the SRT engineers propulsion system is proposed to develop a more powerful HEMI for the Chrysler 300C SRT8, they were aware of the heritage of the motor, which led to adopting traditional HEMI engine indexes, including a block of orange paint, cylinder and valve covers black.

SRT engineers developed the Chrysler 300C SRT8 engine achieved more horsepower by adding cubic inches, increasing the compression ratio and redesigning the cylinder head, intake and exhaust system to regulate and increase the speed of the engine.

For more displacement, SRT engineers bored cylinders of the HEMI diameter of 3.5 millimeters each in order to increase the displacement to 6.1 liters from 5.7 liters.

The compression ratio was increased to 10.3:1 from 9.6:1, increasing engine power and strength.

Engine breathing was increased with new high-flow head cylinder, specially designed intake manifold and exhaust manifolds with individual tubes encased in a stainless steel shell, all unique in the 6.1-liter HEMI engine. Larger diameter valves and reshaped ports in the head allows the air flow optimized. The intake manifold was designed with larger diameter runners and less for the high speed setting. Exhaust system is routed to a large diameter (2.75 inches vs. 2.5 inches) exhaust with chrome tips of 3.5 inches.

To further increase the power of the camshaft profiles on the basis of performance have been developed to allow more air in and out of the cylinders and run a higher rpm. SRT engineers increased HEMI's peak speed of the engine power by almost 20 percent to 6,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) from 5000 rpm. Intake and exhaust valve stems are hollow, and exhaust valve stems are filled with sodium to help dissipate heat more effectively.

The high-performance SRT 6.1-liter HEMI is strengthened with redesigned components, including a reinforced engine block, a forged steel crankshaft, powdered metal bars of high resistance connection, floating-pin pistons (cooled guns oil), modified oil and a cover to handle the return of the oil pan sump at high speed.

Power for the SRT 6.1-liter HEMI is channeled through a five-speed automatic transmission specially calibrated driver-selectable Auto Stick ®, which offers fully automatic or manual selection. A heavy four pin clamp transmits torque transmission to improve differential and axles.

my 2006 300 Touring has been great and horrible at the same time. unfortunately the horrible is starting to out weigh the good. I bought it for it looks and power. At purchase time, 79,000 miles, it was a friends corp fleet vehicle.You can't deny it is one of the coolest looking cars on the road today. The V6 power is great, but the transmission is a pain, shifting is horrible (automatic). ESP works very well, sort of clunky in its responsiveness. Mechanical issues: front end rattling that nobody can seem to fix or id, broken tie rod, brakes:caliper malf replacd evry 20k. worst of all electrical: entire heat/air controls work sporatically, and headlights flicker off at worst time.

Kangoo Van Maxi Z.E.

An inescapable issue for electric vehicles is battery cost. Not only can it have a considerable impact on the initial purchase price, but there’s also the financially unpleasant prospect of eventual replacement.



Government-backed schemes such as the UK’s Plug-in Car Grant can help with the former problem, but what if a manufacturer is trying to market an electric van, which currently isn’t eligible for such a helping hand?



Renault’s solution for its electric Kangoo Van Z.E. - as with its entire EV line-up - is that owners can buy or lease the vehicle itself, but the batteries will have to be rented.



In the UK, that means a monthly battery fee of at least £59 (plus VAT), based on 9,000 miles per annum and a 48 month commitment. Adding on maintenance plus the electricity needed to recharge the batteries, Renault reckons that overall running costs will be similar to those of a petrol or diesel equivalent if less than 9,375 miles (about 15,000 kilometres) are driven each year. Travel more than that, and it’s advantage electric.



When sales of the Kangoo Van Z.E. begin at the end of 2011, both standard and extended wheelbase Maxi versions will be available. What’s more, with an overall length of 4.60 metres, the Maxi is going to be offered in two guises.





First is a traditional two-seat van, which has 4.6 cubic metres of cargo space and a maximum load length of 2.90 metres. Alternatively, users could choose a five-seat version that comes with a 60/40 folding rear bench seat.



The Kangoo has a 59 bhp (44 kW / 60 PS) motor that’s powered by an under-floor 22 kWh battery. However, with an expected range of 105 miles (around 170 kilometres) and a recharging time of six to eight hours, operations are clearly going to be restricted to short, local journeys.



UK pricing for the Kangoo Van Maxi Z.E. has been set at £17,990 (plus VAT) for the two-seat version, or £18,690 (plus VAT) for the crew van version.

The Italian tuner Romeo Ferraris is at it again. This time they're taking on the Corvette Z06.

Romeo Ferraris takes the American import and drops its own compressor onto the LS7 7.0 liter V8 engine. The Vortech kit used includes a centrifugal compressor, an air-to-air aluminum intercooler and high-flow injectors. Total output goes from the standard Z06's 512 PS (377 kW) and 637 Nm of torque to 677 PS (498 kW) and 823 Nm.

Those new power ratings also come as a benefit of a new sport exhaust system and the Z06-RF is held in check by larger performance disk-brakes featuring 380 mm, 6-piston calipers for the front and 345 mm, 4-piston calipers at the back.

Front and rear wheels also differ in dimensions, with Romeo Ferraris fitting this Z06-RF with 19-inch rims at the front and 20-inch at the back.

Performance numbers include a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 3.3 seconds and if you keep going you'll reach 200 km/h (124 mph) in under 10 seconds. Top speed is 340 km/h (211 mph).

Romeo Ferraris also provides a new interior finish to add a European touch to this American muscle car. That includes an in-house "Commando" sport steering wheel by Romeo Ferraris, Recaro Sportster seats and leather touches to replace outgoing plastic moldings.



Audi R8 V10 by Wheelsandmore


German tuner Wheelsandmore is offering a performance upgrade on the Audi R8 V10 model which is powered by the 5.2 liter TFSI engine.

Wheelsandmore handcrafted its own stainless-steel exhaust system with valve control and with the help of an ECU re-mapping gets the R8's 5.2 liter V10 TFSI engine up to 600 PS (441 kW) and 590 Nm (435 lb-ft) of torque. That's a boost of 75 PS and 60 Nm of torque over the standard configuration - which is 525 PS (386 kW) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft).

For the suspension, there's KW race coilovers with adjustable rebound and compression rates. The new hydraulic suspension can move 4.5 cm (1.77 inches) up or down to adjust the ride height.

The tuner has also crafted its own 3-piece wheels for the R8, which come in 9 x 20 dimensions at the front and 11 x 20 for the rear and in various color combinations. The rims come wrapped in Continental Sport Contact III tires sized 235/30/20 and 295/25/20 front/back, respectively.

Volvo to Build New Car Plant in China

At a press conference held earlier today in Beijing, Chinese-owned Volvo Cars announced plans to build a new plant in the city of Chengdu and continuing investigations for a second factory in Daqing, in north-eastern China. Volvo said that the deal is still pending approval from the Chinese government.  

"We regard the Chinese market as the second home market for Volvo Car Corporation and a very important part of the plan to build a successful future for the company," said Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.
The Chengdu assembly plant will only build Volvo cars and have an initial output of around 100,000 cars annually, with production estimated to start during 2013. Volvo said that the decision to expand in China will not affect operations and employment in Europe.
"We will build an entirely new plant in Chengdu and further investigate the opportunities for establishing an additional factory in Daqing," said Jacoby. "Our production in China will, however, not have any impact on decisions affecting capacity utilization of our plants in Sweden and Belgium" says Stefan Jacoby.
The Swedish automaker, which was acquired from Ford by China's Geely in 2010, also announced that Shanghai will serve as Volvo Car China's headquarters and centre for product development, design and sourcing. "Among other priorities, Volvo Car China will also support Volvo Corporation R&D in Sweden regarding the development of electric vehicles and hybrids," the company said in a statement.
"The Volvo Car China Technology Centre in Shanghai will develop into a complete product development organization on an international level," said Freeman Shen, Volvo Car Corporation SVP & China Operations Chairman. "It will have the competence and capacity to work together with the HQ in Sweden, participating in Volvo Car Corporation's work process for developing entirely new models."
Volvo said that it plans to increase its business presence in the China and aims to reach a sales volume of about 200,000 cars a year in the country by 2015. The company's global retail sales during 2010 reached 373,525 (an increase of 11.2 per cent compared to 2009), with only 30,000 of those sold in China.
