2011 Subaru WRX STI
Hence the 2011 Subaru WRX STI Type UK, which has been designed to address those criticisms. It gets a proper boot for the first time (the hatch version remains on sale too) and wider wheel arches, but it loses the Impreza name. According to Subaru, the WRX STI has become a model in its own right.
The WRX STI was never going to be a particularly pretty car, and the saloon is crying out for a decent boot lid spoiler to help balance its proportions, but the update appears to have been generally successful. The changes are more than skin deep, though.
A stiffer body than before has allowed longer travel suspension to be fitted, which improves both ride quality and road holding. Based on the ‘Spec C’ set up, the revised chassis has been combined with a lower ride height and wider tyres to further improve driver feedback and control.
Unsurprisingly, there’s a turbocharged boxer engine under the bonnet. Still with a capacity of 2.5 litres, it has now been cleaned up to meet Euro 5 emissions standards. Power remains at 295 bhp (220 kW / 300 PS), with a very healthy 407 Nm of torque available at 4,000 rpm. Subaru claims the way in which that torque is delivered has been improved, meaning that there’s a better throttle response and more linear acceleration.
0-62 mph (100 km/h) takes just 5.2 seconds, while top speed is still restricted to 155 mph (250 km/h). Fuel economy isn’t too brilliant though, with the WRX STI managing just 26.9 mpg (10.5 l/100km) on the combined cycle. CO2 emissions of 324 g/km mean that the Subaru doesn’t quite make it into the top tier for UK road tax purposes, but nevertheless it’s in Band L which will set the owner back £425 each year.
For 2011, the WRX STI’s all-wheel drive system has been upgraded, and the differentials now have revised settings. Torque is sent 41% front / 59% rear by default, but this can be altered via the four-mode Driver’s Control Centre Differential system. Also adjustable is the electronic stability control - or Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control in Subaru-speak - which lets the driver decide how intrusive it is.
As part of the revisions, the interior gets better materials for a more quality feel, and there are new Recaro seats for the driver and passenger. Standard equipment for 2011 includes Bluetooth telephone connectivity, climate control, ten-speaker audio with USB and AUX input jacks, cruise control and keyless entry.
The Subaru WRX STI is available in the UK now and costs £33,405 OTR for either the saloon or hatchback versions.
That price would usually be comparable to its archrival, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR FQ-300. However, significant reductions across all of the Evo X range mean that the GSR FQ-300 can currently be had for £28,804 and, unluckily for Subaru, that’s a big saving.

Impreza Cosworth
Unsurprisingly, the 2.5-litre boxer engine has been the focus of Cosworth’s attention. It receives a modified turbo and remapped ECU, as well as reworked internal components. As a result, the STi CS400 has 395bhp (400PS / 295kW), and 540Nm of torque. Those are significant improvements over the Impreza STi Type UK which, with the 330R pack (currently being offered to UK buyers as a free upgrade until the end of June), produces 325bhp (330PS / 243kW) and 470Nm.
Almost a second is knocked off the 330R’s 0-62mph (100km/h) time, with the STi CS400 achieving the benchmark sprint in just 3.7 seconds. That’s up there with supercars like the Porsche 911 GT2 RS (3.5 seconds) and Audi R8 GT (3.6 seconds), and it makes the Ford Focus RS500 (5.6 seconds) look distinctly pedestrian.
Perhaps importantly - for Subaru at least - is the fact that its STi CS400 is 0.1 seconds quicker to 62mph than the most powerful Mitsubishi Evolution X, the £52,299 FQ-400 with its 403bhp (409PS / 301kW). One area where the STi CS400 is no quicker than either the 330R or FQ-400, however, is top speed - like them, it remains limited to 155mph.
Chassis improvements include new Bilstein shock absorbers and Eibach springs, which give the STi CS400 a wider track and allow it to ride 10mm lower. The brakes are also upgraded, with 355mm AP Racing discs at the front.
Cosmetically, the Cosworth is distinguished by a new front bumper, mesh grilles, privacy glass and a revised rear spoiler, together with new 18” alloys. The interior gets different Recaro front seats and piano black wood for the centre console.
Its price and performance means the STi CS400 can be looked at in one of two ways: Either it’s a performance bargain, costing a third of a ‘proper’ supercar like the 911 GT2 RS, or it’s just a very expensive hot hatch with a price tag almost double that of a standard £28,000 Impreza STi Type UK.
One thing for sure is that the Impreza Cosworth STi CS400 will be rare. Only 75 are to be built, and they’re all going to be right hand drive.

The Sport/Utility of the year Subaru MOTOR TREND’s 2010 Powered Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system

Tokyo, October 16, 2009 – Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, today announced that Subaru of America, Inc.* released the Subaru Outback (US specifications model) was named MOTOR TREND’s 2010 Sport/Utility of the year. The Subaru Outback’s victory follows the Subaru Forester’s win for the 2009 award, making Subaru the first automaker to win two consecutive MOTOR TREND Sport/Utility of the Year awards.
Living up to Subaru’s legendary safety record, the Outback offers cutting-edge safety technology, including Subaru’s ring reinforcement safety system, front, seat-mounted side, and side-curtain airbags and ABS. Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system, which incorporates stability and traction control systems with a roll-over sensor, is also standard equipment. The Subaru Outback was recently named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).

To judge contenders for the award, MOTOR TREND‘s editorial staff conducted an exhaustive three-phase testing process. Phase one of the process includes a full tech check and weigh-in, then full track testing to establish baseline data for acceleration, braking, and handling. Phase two involves three days of road loops offering a range of road surfaces and traffic conditions to evaluate ride and handling, engine and transmission smoothness and responsiveness, wind and road noise, and ergonomics. A dirt-track section tests traction, stability, and braking control systems. In phase three the judges debate and deliberate.
This year, the editors updated and expanded the judging criteria to six new categories: Design Advancement, Engineering Excellence, Intended Function, Efficiency, Safety and Value.
MOTOR TREND’s Sport/Utility of the Year® is not a comparison test and is only open to all-new or substantially upgraded vehicles that have gone on sale in the 12 months from November 1 of the previous year. MOTOR TREND looks for the pick of each year’s crop of new SUV’s, and does not revisit vehicles that have been on sale for the past few years.

Subaru Sports Coupe New sketch Design
Today the network has left some sketches for a new Subaru Sports Coupe which could be the "Version" Subaru Toyota project ..
Nopn is unclear whether the effect will be produced is the version that Toyota Subaru, it is certain that the two are similar on paper a lot.
All too soon however to be certain
Several sketches have leaked out featuring the Subaru-branded version of a coupe co-developed with Toyota. Although supposedly not yet green-lit by Subaru, the car is continuing to push forward as a Toyota.
Toyota will debut their FT-86 concept at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month. Details of the concept were sent out in a release earlier this week, with Toyota confirming the vehicle's use of the Subaru 2.0-liter Boxer engine. Averaged Subaru Outback

It is constructed on the basis of last generation Subaru Legacy debuting in April on New York motor-show. For anybody not a secret: a sedan and versatile person Legacy of last generation it is difficult to name samples of ideal style. The bulky heavy forms, obviously accented wheel arches, a high profile is any more that "supercar" which was loved by admirers of a full drive from Subaru.
In new generation Legacy the emphasis is made not on technical innovations, and on other, deeper ideology: now Legacy — the family car for the manager of an average link who from the sky of stars does not suffice.
The car without claims: a fair daily vehicle.
Firm "the symmetric full drive", super-powerful motors in the car are perceived, as a certain atavism. The modular base exists for a long time and is ground by years why not to use these "travelled" motors once again.
Bargaining chip Subaru — still firm symmetric full drive Symmetrical AWD in all complete sets. The car is adapted under all three types of the engine, some of which modernised, and some have replaced. Have not managed and without work on check point modernisation — have added a new 6-step transmission and variator Lineartronic CVT.
The base variant in America is the 2,5-litre 4-cylinder engine giving out 170HP and equipped with system AVLS (i-Active Valve Lift System) which is responsible for timely lifting of valves. With this modifed engine there is in the complete set a new 6-step transmission, and also adapted variator CVT. It is first-ever it is longitudinal the located variator combined with a full drive.
Besides, there is an updating with a turbo-engine with working volume 2,5 litres. To the given engine to the complete set goes a new 6-step manual transmission to which should consult already with the 265-strong motor.

The motor industry of Japan is improbably hi-tech.
Absolutely new engine with working volume 3,6 litres became the third. The engine did not begin to season with the turbine so power — 256HP this 6-cylinder unit is combined with a 5-step automatic check point and it urged to replace in a ruler the previous 3-litre unit. The new philosophy should bring Subaru new clients — those who considered these cars too sharp earlier, youth. However there is also "underside" — many admirers from a novelty will turn away, and not only because of design: change of priorities towards averaging frightens off them.
Europe waits new Outback. But, according to in European representation Subaru, it is not necessary to pay attention to the American model: for Europe prepare something especial. Time will tell...

Subaru Impreza WRX STI Rally Hero Edition

Subaru has announced a new special edition Impreza WRX STI in memory of rally hero Richard Burns who died in November last year of cancer.
Called the RB320, the new car features around £6,000 worth of extra equipment including the 320 bhp Prodrive Performance Pack, yet costs £29,995 on-the-road – an increase of only £3,500.
Available only in Obsidian Black, the RB320 features bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels and specially developed Prodrive suspension comprising Bilstein dampers, a sports spring kit with revised rear anti-roll bar and a ride height lowered by 30 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear.
Also standard on the RB320 are a chrome mesh front grille, front lip spoiler, quickshift gearchange, side sill plates and RB320-branded gear knob, carpet mats and exclusive exterior badging. Each owner will also receive an individually numbered black alloy tax disc holder.
The PPP boosts power to 320 bhp at 6,000 rpm with torque leaping to 332 lb-ft at 3,700 rpm. This reduces the 0-60 mph time to 4.8 seconds with a 0-100 mph time of 12.2 seconds.
And as a further incentive, those customers placing early orders with deposits will be offered a limited number of places at a special RB320 launch event next March at Prodrive’s test track in Warwickshire.
Not only will RB320 fans take delivery of their cars at the circuit but will be able to drive demonstration STIs around the track and meet rally celebrities.
In addition, customers will also be able to register on-line and reserve the limited-edition number of their choice via a special sub-section of Subaru’s website.
Finally, the first car is to be given away in a special raffle organised by Autosport magazine, donated by Subaru (UK) Limited.
The proceeds will go to the Richard Burns Foundation which helps those suffering from serious injury and illness.
